What Washington County Civil Court Records Contain

Civil court records in Washington County include the case number, party names, case type, filing date, and the judge assigned to the matter. The docket then tracks every action taken in the case from start to finish. Each entry records what happened and when, creating a complete timeline of the case. Hearings, filings, motions, orders, and final rulings are all logged.

The physical case file at the courthouse contains the underlying documents. You will find the complaint or petition that started the case, responses from other parties, motions and briefs, court orders, and the final judgment if one was entered. For civil judgments, certified copies from the clerk's office are often needed to enforce collection, record a lien against property, or satisfy requirements in other legal proceedings. Exhibits submitted during hearings may also be in the file.

Not all records are open to the public. Juvenile cases are sealed by law. Adoption records are closed. Records sealed by court order are off limits. Sensitive personal data, including Social Security numbers and bank account information, is redacted from copies. But for standard civil matters, including debt cases, property disputes, small claims, and contract actions, the records are public. Illinois law under 705 ILCS 105/16(6) requires that court records be open for inspection at all times during office hours.

Electronic Filing in Washington County

Civil cases in Washington County must be filed through eFileIL, Illinois's mandatory statewide eFiling system. This requirement covers new cases as well as all documents submitted later in the case. The system is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

To file, you create an eFileIL account and submit documents through an approved Electronic Filing Service Provider, or EFSP. The EFSP sends your filing to the court. Once the clerk accepts the submission, you receive a confirmation with a timestamp. EFSP providers charge service fees on top of the standard court filing fees, and each provider has its own fee schedule.

Exemptions from mandatory eFiling apply to several groups. Incarcerated persons do not have to eFile. Will filings are exempt. Juvenile cases and adoptions do not require eFiling. People with disabilities that prevent electronic use can request accommodation. You can also ask the court for a good-cause exemption. Fees for Washington County Civil Court Records

Washington County follows the standard Illinois fee schedule for civil court record copies and searches. A search costs up to $6.00 per year searched. Paper copies cost $2.00 for the first page, $0.50 each for pages two through twenty, and $0.25 per page after that. Certified copies carry a higher fee. Call the clerk's office to get the current certified copy rate before you visit.

These fees are set by 705 ILCS 105/27.1b, which governs circuit court clerk fees in Illinois. Washington County uses the standard rate. The higher Cook County rate does not apply here.

Searching online through Judici.com is free. The Illinois Supreme Court suspended the electronic access fee under Rule 313 on May 1, 2025. That fee previously charged users a small amount per page to view records online. It is now gone. Online civil court record lookups in Washington County cost nothing. Fees only apply when you request paper copies or certified documents from the clerk's office in Nashville.
